Rancilio Rocky Burr Grinder with Doser

There's a movement occurring in the world today away from traditional espresso machines and their whole beans and towards the capsule/pod/disc/cup driven coffee center. Because of that, less people are buying and grinding their own beans. But if you're like me and appreciate the great taste of real espresso made from real beans, then the Rancilio ROCKY Burr Grinder with Doser might be just the bean grinder for you. At this price, it better be spectacular. Is it? Let's find out.

Before I go on, I just want to mention the price of this coffee bean grinder because it scares a lot of people away and I'd rather not waste your time by making you read about how great this thing is, only to find out that you can't afford it! Ready? Here goes....it costs: $360.

I know, I know, you can get a bean grinder from Wal-Mart or Target for $10 or maybe $15 bucks, or you can get a pretty nice Cuisinart or a Capresso burr grinder for between $50 and $90. But Rancilio products are always more expensive for a reason, and that reason is never because of "flash" or "style" but rather because they use more expensive and higher quality parts in their machines.

Let's Look At This Super Expensive Grinder

Rancilio ROCKY Rancilio Burr Grinder with Doser
First of all, Rancilio usually makes its machines with the Prosumer in mind. This grinder is probably best suited for restaurants, or even small coffee shops. That, and true espresso connoisseurs!

It has 50mm grinding wheels, which can handle just about every type of grind you would want (except maybe true professional quality grinds). It's made of tempered steel that has been hardened. Can you say durable? I can!

This little guy also has a doser. Don't know what a doser is? It's a sort of lever device. When you pull it, the machine dispenses seven grams of coffee. That exactly the amount you want for espresso (this is made to be an espresso grinder though you can use it for regular coffee too I suppose).

It also has its own hopper so that you can just dump in your beans and forget about them. The hopper is about ten ounces large. That's not a huge amount of beans, but then again my can of Illy is only 8.8 ounces so I'm good. I actually like the smaller sized hopper because it takes up less space on my counter.

Let's get down to the nitty gritty though. This machine has fifty-five different grind settings. I mean really, enough said.

What Are Other People Saying About It?

At Amazon, there were only twelve reviews (the super expensive espresso items usually don't have very many reviews). Fortunately, they were all positive. The Rocky got seven 5-star reviews and five 4-star reviews. It had absolutely no other lower reviews which is quite extraordinary and not something I see very often.

And believe me, if someone just shelled out $350 bucks for a grinder and it didn't work amazingly well, they'd let us hear about it!

What's The Bottom Line

The fact remains that Rancilio is a company that just gets it. They produce incredibly high quality machines (be it espresso machines or coffee bean grinders or anything else) and they charge high prices for them; but that's how it should work!

I'm not sure that I'd spend this much money on any grinder. But if I was going to do it, the Rancilio ROCKY Burr Grinder with Doser is without a doubt the grinder that I would buy. I trust Rancilio as a company and I'd feel comfortable buying anything they produced. If you want the very best and are able to pay for the very best; then buy a Rocky because it is the best.
