Nespresso D290 Concept Espresso and Coffeemaker

If you've spent any time reading my articles here in you've probably picked up on the fact that I'm not a huge fan of those single-cup coffee center machines that have become so incredibly popular over the years, but the Nespresso D290 Concept Espresso and Coffeemaker may actually have broken through to me, and here's why...

Unlike most of those other single-cup type machines out there today, Nespresso machines are made specifically for espresso. Those others are made for coffee/espresso/tea and sometimes even soup! That makes this machine less a single-cup machine, and more a capsule-driven espresso machine...and I can get behind that!

Let's Look At The Machine Itself

Nespresso D290 Concept Espresso and CoffeemakerThe first thing you'll notice is the distinctive look of the machine. It just looks cool. Sort of futuristic, it looks more like something you'd see at a coffee shop. I like it!

Despite it's smallness and cool looks, this is a heavy duty machine! It musters up 19 bars of pump powered pressure. To put that in perspective, espresso requires 7-bars, and most espresso machines have 15-bars. You're more than covered with this machine!

As you would expect, this is a capsule driven machine. Unlike others though, it has an automatic ejection feature that disposes of your spent capsule after you've used it. That really makes this a super-automatic-like machine.

Just as a side note, this espresso maker usually comes with an assortment of twelve different capsules to get you started. That's a really nice feature, especially if you've never used Nespresso capsules before and aren't sure exactly which flavors are right for you.

I mentioned the 19-bars of pressure, in addition to that; this is a 1,250 watt machine which makes it similarly powered to other regular espresso machines on the market. It has a 5 cup water tank which is big enough so that you won't feel like you need to refill it after every other shot. Also, the tank is easily removable so filling it is a breeze, and cleaning it from time to time is no problem.

The great thing about this machine is that you don't have to know or do anything to make a perfect cup of espresso or cappuccino or latte every time. Just pop in your favorite capsule, push the button, and the machine takes care of the rest.

You don't have to worry about grinding coffee beans to the exact fineness, or running the machine for the exact amount of time to get the optimal amount of espresso without watering it down. The ability to simply push a button is a huge reason these machines have become so popular so quickly...

What Others Are Saying About It

At nearly $400, this machine is quite a bit more expensive than other single cup machines out there, and as such it doesn't have as many reviews. Nevertheless, it did get 46 reviews at Amazon, which is pretty good. Thirty-two of them were 5-stars and another five were 4-star. That left five 3-star, and two 2-star and 1-star reviews.

That's a solid 4 and 1/2 out of 5-star average which is about as good as you can get. People really love this machine and the 5-star reviews were full of people that have bought several of them over the years (one for home, one for office, etc).

What's The Bottom Line?

If you love espresso and are in the market for a single-cup capsule driven machine, then this is definitely the machine for you. It may be a little on the expensive side ($399 retail - $379 or less below), but you'll be able to taste that extra money. I never thought it would happen, but I've been won over completely.
