KRUPS XP5240 Precise Tamp Pump Espresso Machine

Krups is a very visible company when it comes to espresso machines and even coffee machines. It seems like you see them in just about every big box store like Wal-Mart or Target and even higher-end stores like Macy's. Krups has some very nice machines, but you have to be careful because they also have some real dogs, like the KRUPS XP5240 Precise Tamp Pump Espresso Machine that we're going to take a quick look at today.

Let's Look At The Specs For This Machine

This is a 1,400 watt machine that spits out 15 bars of pump-powered pressure. Normally if a machine used 1,400 watts I'd sit up and take notice because I usually only see about 1,050 or sometime 1,200.

As you would expect, it also has a Thermoblock heating system and also, sort of unique, a removable filter. It also has a steam frother so that you can make your favorite cappuccinos, latte's, mocha's, Americano's or whatever strikes your fancy.

The XP5240 comes out swinging with a universal coffee grounds holder that lets you choose between using regular coffee beans or E.S.E. pods and even soft pods. This is a nice touch and immediately raises my spirits and makes me think that this Krups machine is a little better then the rest of the pack.

Let's see how long that feeling lasts...

This is a very nice looking machine with a pleasant blend of stainless steel and black on its exterior. It's got a nice size to it as well; not too big and not too small. At fourteen pounds, it feel substantial enough, but not too heavy.

What Other People Are Saying

So far this machine looks pretty good, unfortunately the reviews throw up a ton of red flags. The XP5240 has thirty-three reviews at Amazon, but averages just 2 out of 5 stars. Ouch! It has four 5-star reviews, three 4-star reviews, one 3-star reviews, seven 2-star reviews, and an amazing eighteen 1-star reviews. It's almost painful to watch.

So what do the majority of people who hate this espresso maker have to say? Well, they say the steam frother wand breaks easily or shoots off. Really that's the major complaint. Personally I don't use a frother, I like straight espresso so this wouldn't be an issue with me. But if you like to make espresso drinks like cappuccino, this is definitely a deal breaker.

What's The Bottom Line?

It's a nice looking machine that I wouldn't mind seeing on my counter every day. But for $200 you expect a machine that has a frother that won't break down - ever - and if the past customers are correct (and they usually are) then this machine has major frother issues.

You may be tempted to give the KRUPS XP5240 Precise Tamp Pump Espresso Machine a try because it's a Krups and they do make several really good machines. If you're like a lot of people, you may even have owned an old trusty Krups in the past and want to replace it with a newer model. Sadly, this is probably not the model to replace that old one with! But don't give up on Krups; read some of our other (much better) reviews in the links below.
