Jura-Capresso Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center

A friend of mine stopped by my place last week with a question. They'd been using a fairly inexpensive semi-automatic espresso machine ($150-$300 range) for a few years and were really happy with it, except for the fact that it had just died on them.

Since they had to buy a new machine, my friend wondered if it was time to bump up to something a little more fancy. I suggested the Jura-Capresso Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center for a number of reasons that I'd like to discuss right here today.

Let's Take A Look At This Machine

Jura-Capresso Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso CenterThis is a large, fully automatic espresso center that does everything you could possibly want and then some. It comes with a 1,450 watt thermoblock heating system so you know it can really crank out the right temperatures.

It also creates 18-bars of pump driven pressure which ensures a very high quality of espresso. Espresso generally requires at least 7 bars just to turn the water into true espresso and a regular semi-automatic usually produces 15 bars. Jura always does everything just a little better than everyone else!

Unlike some other machines that claim to be automatics, the J5 has 6 different drink buttons, and 11 different programming options. You might think all these different options are just confusing but they really aren't that hard to figure out.

It also has an LCD screen that makes things a little easier as well.

It's water tank is fully removable so filling it's a breeze, and it holds a massive 8 and 7/8ths cups of water so you won't have to keep filling the thing after every other shot like with some machines.

Like mot automatics, it has a conical burr grinder. This grinder has 6-settings so that you can have your beans ground to the exact fineness or coarseness that you prefer for that perfect shot of espresso.

Finally, it has a really cool dual steam wand frother system so that you can make your favorite drinks such as cappuccino, latte, mocha, etc. What's different about this system is that it has 2 frothers, an automatic one and a manual one.

This gives you a ton of control when making specialty drinks. Not picky? Use the automatic frother. Want to tweak your drink to suit your exact tastes? Use the manual frother. You don't see that feature on many other machines today and it's a great addition.

What Are Others Saying?

This is an expensive machine, so we should take a look at the customer reviews. At Amazon, there aren't a whole lot of reviews but there usually aren't for machines that are this expensive. It did, however, receive 10 reviews. Five of them were 5-star and another two were 4-star. Then there were one each of 3-star, 2-star, and 1-star reviews.

That comes to an impressive 4 out of 5 stars on average. Actually that average should be a little higher because the 1-star review was someone complaining about a different Jura-Capresso espresso machine not even remotely related to this one.

The only problem people had with the machine is with the frother wand. A couple of people have had their frother wand fall off during use. It doesn't break, it just comes off for some people. You just pop it back on and away you go. (proper cleaning of the wand may fix that problem).

What's The Bottom Line?

If you've had a regular semi-automatic machine for a few years and are ready to move up to the next level, then the Jura-Capresso Impressa J5 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center could be the automatic for you. Regularly priced at $2,700; I was able to find a bunch on sale (link below) for only $1,599. Getting a quality Jura automatic for over $1,100 off is something you probably want to take advantage of right away because I don't know how long that price will last!
