Is A Rancilio Espresso Machine Right For You?

It's no secret that I love Rancilio Espresso Machines, I think that they're some of the most well-made, and amazing espresso makers on the planet today. But that doesn't mean they're right for you. Is a Rancilio espresso maker "too much" machine for you? That's what I'm going to talk about today.

What Are Your Options?

Rancilio is primarily a commercial espresso machine producer, so your options for a consumer version of their machines are pretty limited. There are really just two main models that you have to choose from, namely:

  • Rancilio ST-1 Epoca Semi-Automatic Espresso Machine
  • Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

I reviewed each of them in detail and you can check out the links to those reviews at the very bottom of this page. If a Rancilio is right for you, either one will suit your needs wonderfully depending on what you're looking for. The question becomes, is Rancilio right for you?

What's The Problem?

Well, there are two main problems...actually I wouldn't call them "problems"; you could probably call them "issues" if you want to be precise about it.

The issues are these:

  • Price
  • Power

Rancilio espresso machines are incredibly expensive. In fact, I'd probably go so far as to label them just about the most expensive manual (semi-automatic to be precise) machines on the market today. For what you would spend on one of them, you could easily purchase a decent fully automatic machine; and that's what most people do.

The other issue is power. These are very powerful machines...and therefore a little more complicated then your average manual semi-automatic manual machine. Rancilio produces commercial grade espresso machines, for coffee shops, restaurants and things like that.

They use a lot of those commercial grade parts in their consumer models. That makes those consumer models very good machines, but makes them more complicated to use.

To be perfectly frank with you, unless you have a lot of experience using a home espresso machine...a Rancilio is probably overkill. You aren't going to get the full benefits from the machine because you won't know how to use it and probably won't take the time to learn (who's got that kind of time these days?).

Especially when, for nearly $700, you can buy a really nice automatic machine elsewhere that lets you literally just push a button and it will do everything from grind the beans, to brew the espresso, to turn itself off and dispose of the coffee grounds for you!

And that's really what most people end up doing.

So who IS a Rancilio Espresso Machine For?

There is a market for these machines. Like I said, they're the best. They'll make extraordinary espresso, one shot at a time, and last for years and years to come (in a time when most machines seem to kick the bucket after a year or two of heavy use).

If you want the best, either know espresso well or are willing to learn, and have the extra cash to spare - then a Rancilio is your best choice. If you can learn to use it, you'll enjoy many great years of espresso heaven.

So is a Rancilio Espresso Machine right for you? Only you can decide that. I can say this though, nothing labels you a hardcore espresso fan more than owning one of these heavy duty machines. If you've got the cash and the juice, I hardily recommend them.
