Illy Coffee Pods

If you've been to my web site in the past and read a few of my articles, then you've probably psychically picked up on the fact that I love Illy coffee almost more than life itself. If you're not psychic, you might have figured it out because I just won't shut up about it....either way, Illy is great coffee.

It's great for regular coffee, it's great for French press coffee, and it's great for espresso. And now, it's great for all those loopy pod machines because they now make Illy Coffee Pods!

They're primarily for use in the FrancisFrancis! espresso machine (see my reviews for them by clicking on the FrancisFrancis! link over there to the right), but I'm pretty sure you can use them in any other pod machine too.

Oh course, I don't know that for a fact because I won't go near those pod machines with a 10-foot pole. I like grinding my own beans, it's part of the fun! So sue me...uh, or not. Whatever *L* Getting back on track...

What Options Do you Have?

The pods come in the same "flavors" or "blends" (or whatever you want to call it) that you've come to know and love from the Illy bean selection; namely:

  • Medium Roast
  • Dark Roast
  • Decaf
Dark Roast Illy Coffee Pods

The standard package has 18 pods in them, though you can find them in 2-package sets and sometimes find a slightly less expensive price for them.

They cost around $14 for the medium and between $14 and $20 for the dark roast (and the dark roast can be a little harder to find). Oh, and the decaf costs around $15.

Those 18-packs hold about 4.4 ounces of coffee grounds. Follow me here...a regular can of Illy has 8.8 ounces of beans in it (I believe) and costs about the same price as their related pod roast...

Medium Roast Illy Coffee Pods

So it might seem like you're paying roughly double for the pods versus the regular can of beans. Well, it doesn't "seem" like it...you flat out are paying roughly double!

But that's a pod thing, not an Illy thing. It doesn't really matter what brand of coffee you buy, it's always going to be roughly that much more expensive then regular beans. Why? Two reasons that I can tell:

  • There's more manufacturing processing involved They have to build the pods, package them, blah blah blah. With beans, they just dump them in a can. So it makes sense that pods cost more.
  • Pods are a novelty and novelties always cost more (no I'm not a coffee bean snob!).

So What About Taste?

Ah! You tried to trick me there didn't you...tried to get me to admit that I use pods...well you're out of luck. I've never used pods so I can't really report on how well the Illy pods taste. But it's Illy and I'd almost bet my arm that the taste is fantastic, just like the beans.

The reviews I've been able to find all say pretty much the same thing; that people love these things.

So Which Ones Should You Buy?

Stick with the same designation you would for regular Illy beans. Medium roast for coffee, dark roast for espresso, decaf if, and only if, you are on direct doctors orders never to ingest caffeine!

What's The Final Word?

All kidding aside, if you use pod machines then Illy Coffee Pods are really what you should be using in those pod machines; especially if it's an Illy FrancisFrancis! pod machine. They may be a little pricey, but the really good things in life always are. Grab a few boxes below:
