How To Pick The Illy Coffee Bean That's Right For You

I don't make any attempt to hide the fact that Illy is my absolute favorite coffee bean for making both regular coffee as well as espresso. When creating a review-style web site it's very important to be objective so that you can remain credible to your readers. But in this case, I just don't care! I love Illy beans. Period!

Illy Whole Bean Medium Roast
Have I converted you into an Illy drinker yet? Why not! Okay, okay..let's talk about the options you have and how to choose which type of Illy bean to try.

Unlike a lot of other coffee companies out there, Illy doesn't really offer a lot of different options. They apparently don't feel the need to bombard you with superficial choices. I like that.

Basically you just have three choices (four if you count their decaf blend - which I don't, not because it tastes bad but just because I object to ALL decaf coffee on purely intellectual grounds!). Choose from:

  • Normal Roast
  • Medium Roast
  • Dark Roast

Further you can choose between whole beans and pre-ground, also in those "flavors" above. Though really, if you're a true coffee and espresso nut like me, you're always going to get whole beans so that you can grind them yourself exactly the way you like.

Illy Whole Bean Dark Roast And also keep in mind the company offers each of those "flavors" in different grind options such as fine grind, medium grind, etc. Oh, and don't forget pods as well. You can get all these options in pod form too.

It says it on the can, obviously, but you can also identify the whole bean cans because they have colored tops, versus the pre-ground stuff that has silver tops and colored bottoms. So if you're at the store and in a hurry, you can just eyeball it.

Red for Medium beans, black for Dark Roast beans, Green for...decaf (Remember green does NOT mean go here people! Resist the urge! fight the good fight against decaf!).

Which Illy Coffee Bean Is Right For You?

I like my espresso strong, but (ironically) my coffee a little on the slightly less strong side (not weak! just slightly less strong). So for espresso I use the Whole Bean Dark Roast and for my coffee I use the Whole Bean Medium Roast. To be perfectly honest with you, I've never tried (or even seen) Normal Roast so I can't really comment on it.

Take it from me though, for coffee - the Medium Roast is don't even bother with the Normal Roast. And with espresso you want the Dark Roast because the Medium Roast is just a little too weak for espresso (we're talking Arabica beans here).

And that's really all there is to it. Since there aren't that many different options to choose from, it's really easy to give them a try. Like I've said elsewhere on this web site, Illy is a top of the line coffee that won't cost you an arm and a leg. At my local WholeFoods, it costs around $15 bucks for an 8 ounce can. You can find it a little cheaper if you order online from the link below.

Wherever you buy it though, I highly recommend you give them a try. You may never look at other coffee beans the same, ever again. What have you got to lose? Join me in the Illy Fan Club today by buying a can right now.
