Cuisinart EM-100 Espresso Machine

The Cuisinart Em-100 Espresso Machine is quickly becoming one of my favorite entry level machines, and not just because of the price (it's regularly $270 but we've found it for only $120 at the link here at the bottom of the page). I'm not the only one, the world has noticed as well. This might be my new all time favorite starter espresso machine. Here's why...

When you look at a basic single shot manual espresso machine you only really want it to do a few things, but you want it to do those few things very well. You also want it to hold up and last a long time. The EM-100 scores huge on both counts.

The Machine

Cuisinart Em-100 Espresso Machine
Let's dive right into the specifics of this neat little espresso maker. First off, it comes with the industry standard 15 bars of pressure. It also comes with a pretty nice sized water tank (fifty-three ounces) that's fully removable for hassle-free and easy cleaning. It comes with a steam wand so that you can make all those tasty cappuccinos and lattes and mocha drinks that you love.

Amazingly enough, it also comes with a POD adapter! A growing number of people like to use pods instead of coffee beans because they're easier to use and less messy. Usually if you want to use them though, you have to buy a special machine. Not any more! This is an unprecedented bonus on an espresso machine in this price range, you just don't see it anywhere else.

It also comes with a three year warranty! WOW! Most of these types of models come with a one year warranty at best. Cuisinart really stands by it's machines! Remember earlier when I said that you want a machine that will last? There you go!

Finally, it comes with a cup warming plate. Personally I think this is a silly function for an espresso machine (it's a shot of espresso, do you really think it's going to cool down in the 20 seconds it takes me to drink it?) but it's still nice nonetheless.

What's The Downside?

This might not be a big deal, but in my mind there is one potential downside to this machine. It only pulls 1,000 watts. For a machine of this size, I'd like to see it using a good solid 1,200 watts.

Luckily though, I haven't heard any complaints about the temperature of the espresso. You worry that 1,000 watts won't heat up the water enough but apparently this isn't an issue at all. Still, I thought I would at least mention it. (hey, every machine should have SOMETHING wrong with it, even if we're just splitting hairs!).

What People Are Saying About The EM-100

Sometimes it's hard to get a bead on reviews because not a lot of people take the time to post them. That is certainly NOT the case with the EM-100! At Amazon alone there are over 130 reviews! Of those reviews, sixty gave it a 5-star, thirty gave it a 4-star, and thirty-one gave it less than 4-stars. That's an average of a good solid 4 out of 5 stars which is superb for an entry level machine like this one.

Many of the people that gave it poor reviews had trouble with the machine right out of the box. Of course, Cuisinart will fix or replace those types of things with their 3-year warranty, so this isn't an issue that I really worry about for my readers.

You really don't often see a machine that is given so many good reviews and that really means something in the world of espresso machines.

What's The Bottom Line?

The bottom line is that this is an amazing machine for the price. At $120, you really can't go wrong, and there really isn't anything else to compare it to. My previous favorite beginner machine was the Briel Chamonix, which costs around $200. But now, if you're looking to get started in the wonderful world of espresso, I now recommend you buy a Cuisinart Em-100 Espresso Machine. But don't pay the full $270 price tag!
